Something like a shared universe - only moreso.
A kind of massive hypertext, Collaborative, Epistolary fiction.
Like blog like it's the end of the world day only more long term and with less Zombies (though there may be Zombies at some point). Events would happen and the text would consist of blog posts, instant message logs and similar involving characters reacting to them. If people wanted they could even put up in character vlogs, podcasts and voice/webcam conversations (purporting to be phone conversations, or even survaillance) on youtube and podbean (or similar) making it a multimedia event. If we could find someone who could write articles for a fictional newspaper site it would be give even more vermisilitude.
I suppose it would be similar to roleplay - except it would be written for the consumption of others not just the other players/writers.
The setting would probably be my Haventon (a town where weirdness is as common as Sunnydale or Smallville - a place where you can well imagine a "wall of weird" ala Smallville at the local paper) and would record people's reactions as the "weird" gradually became more and more obvious until the Masquerade is blown apart.
Of course there would have to be some coordinated worldbuilding first and I think getting it off the ground would be the first and possibly largest hurdle. If I can get enough people interested I'll start a google group for the initial planning.
What do you think?

and tell me when it rains.
I'll blend up that rainbow above you,
